If you really want to stay at Kuta beach proper, it's about a 35 minute walk from the airport to the Pantai Kuta sign which is a little far if you have substantial luggage. But leaving the airport will allow you to get cheaper transportation nonetheless.

The domestic terminal at Denpasar airport. There is a free golf cart that will take you between domestic and international.
From taking a taxi to walking, your cheapest transportation options are from outside the airport. There are also plenty of hotels within walking distance to the Denpasar (DPS) airport in Bali. Save money with these easy instructions.
It's just sort of the default to get a taxi from the taxi stand at the airport. They have pre-set fares and there are no other options within the airport. But with an easy walk outside the airport you can catch a bemo, cheaper taxi or ojek to just about anywhere, or if you want to stay in Kuta near the airport, simply walk a few blocks to tons of great hotels!

For my hotel I chose The Kutaya hotel since I thought I could store my luggage there while I went to Komodo. That didn't quite work out (see Storing Your Luggage in Denpasar), but the hotel was wonderful and it was only a 25 minute walk along the beach boardwalk to the main area of Kuta and only a 10 minute walk to the airport on small empty roads. There was also a lot of great restaurants about a block away!
If you are going TO the airport from the Kuta area, your hotel will give you directions on how to walk from the hotel to the airport where it's then a simple matter of crossing the street and going down the covered walkway, so here are directions for getting out of the airport.
A covered walkway goes across the front of the property. Find the sign for the motorcycle parking and take that turn away from the terminals. It's a rather inconspicuous covered walkway heading out of the airport property. There are actually paid lockers along this walkway too!
At the end of that walkway, you can catch a bemo if you are going far or a taxi or ojek (motorbike taxi). Or you can walk across the street and find your way to your hotel. The roads are surprisingly small for being right next to an international airport!
