THE Panama Canal in action.
THE Panama Canal in action.
The big city full of drugs, the canal, and the San Blas Islands. << old website quick post >>
Old posts from my very first travel website!

Just a quick note while we have internet at our hostel. We decided on a last second trip to Panama and thanks to Steve & Judy and the buddy passes, we arrived here last Sunday.

Panama city has a ton to offer. It´s pretty safe, has easy (but not super cheap) transportation, and lots of sites to see. We went off right away to see the canal. We got to see 2 Panamax barges come through the Miraflores lock while were were there. They are container ships built specifically to be the largest boat that can fit through the canal.
Panama City was okay. We were hanging out with a guy at our hostel and it turns out he is a good friend of Doug - our neighbor in Colorado!

Then off to the islands of San Blas where we stayed in a Kuna indian village, visited some surrounding islands, and soaked in the local culture.
On our way to San Blas, our truck got stuck in the mud off the side of the road.

The river is low so it's all mud and more mud.

That's our island. So small.

We went on a tour of some of the islands. Too bad the weather wasn't the greatest.

But they sure caught some big fish!

We then went to Colon to try and get a job as line handlers for a free ride through the canal, but we really needed a day or two more than we had. So we spent a few days up there with a local guy who was generous enough to let us stay at his house and show us around. Not to mention that he shared his rum too!

Now we´re back in the big city and will try and fly home tomorrow morning. It´s been fast, but what a great trip!! We really needed a backpacking refresh.
The ladies are all busy stringing beads on their legs. I got a small one just around my ankle.
