Middle of the Night Intruder

BLOG: Un-related thoughts and activites of the day . . . .

No, this little guy was not the 2am intruder. Cutest little gecko ever.

From big critters to tiny, I'm finding myself a bit jumpy. The 2am break-in certainly didn't help.
Every day at around 3pm the rain comes. It might rain only for an hour or it might rain all night.

The windows don't have any glass, they're just screens attached with strong Velcro, decorative security bars, and wooden shutters. But it's really cool because the eaves are wide enough that I don't have to close the window shutters when it rains. I can leave all the windows open for a nice breeze, the sound of ocean waves, and the sounds of birds in the morning. The mornings are lovely, clean and still other than all the tropical birds waking up and the occasional dinosaur (aka howler monkey) call, all at around 5am. No sleeping in here!

The nights are dark and quiet. I swear I think the neighbors to go to bed at like 7pm because their house is completely dark by then. I'm so happy there are lightening bugs in the front yard! Just magical. :)

Last night I was woken up at 2am by a loud crackling sound. Was it breaking branches outside? Was it my imagination? Part of a dream? No. I know that sound. It’s the sound of strong Velcro ripping. The window screens! Fuck. The light switch is across the room. “Hello?” I’m sure my scared timid voice will scare anyone away. Flashlight. I know there are flashlights on every shelf but I’m fumbling and can’t find the one next to my bed. Got it. Silence.

I slowly creep around the corner to the kitchen and shine my light on the far window. Sure enough, the screen is open along the bottom. Please don't let anything be INSIDE the house. I shine the light out the window to a set of glowing eyeballs. OMG I'm so thankful it's some sort of dangerous and possibly rabid wild animal rather than a person! And it's outside. Whew, I can breathe now.

It seemed to have RUNNOFT (have you seen Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?) leaving a wet sandy shelf outside the window. Raccoon I’ll bet. Yep, wet prints outside look somewhat raccoon-like. Now I am left wondering how on earth I keep them from getting in.
Little footprints all over my table.

Here's where he tried to get in. Left a bunch of sand and stuff on the shelf. Apparently he was a wet raccoon. LOL

I'm trying not to be scared here alone in the dark. I feel like i'm fine but then i'll jump out of my skin when something moves in my peripheral or the odd coconut or palm frond drops from a tree. Just a few minutes ago it was the tiniest little gecko I've ever seen. He crawled onto my elbow. Such a light touch that I thought he was a large bug, not a cute little thang that he was. I really need to mellow out. And hope that I have no more late night visitors.
